The Algerian Painter

Maria (The Algerian Painter)is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist based in Washington, D.C., known professionally as The Algerian Painter. Her signature body of work features multi-layered, glow-in-the-dark canvases that blend vibrant emotion with therapeutic intention. Drawing from her Algerian roots and lived experiences, Maria uses her art as a meditative practice transforming pain, anxiety, and memory into light.

Her pieces have been exhibited at DTR Modern Gallery in Georgetown, including a large-scale collaboration with acclaimed artist Halim A. Flowers, and she has created commissioned works for Lonnie Ali, wife of Muhammad Ali, now held in the permanent collection of The Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

Through The Algerian Painter, Maria continues to expand her practice into accessible art prints, large-scale commissions, and community-based projects centered on healing through visual art. Her work is part of private collections across the United States and North Africa.

I’m always open and ready to commission new pieces. Have an idea? I can bring it to life! Contact me here:
